How to Print A0 Sewing Patterns: A Complete Guide

If you've bought a PDF sewing pattern — standard A0 or an oversized, non-standard file — you've got a few ways to turn it into a full-size pattern you can cut and sew. This guide explains what A0 printing is, how A0 paper sizes work, the real differences between printing at home, at a copy shop, or through a dedicated pattern service, and how to choose the right paper for your project.

What Is A0 Printing (and How Big Is A0 Paper)?

A0 is the largest standard ISO paper size: 841 × 1189 mm (33.1 × 46.8 inches) — roughly 16 sheets of letter paper in a single sheet. Most PDF sewing patterns are designed to print full-size on one or more A0 sheets, so the whole pattern comes out at true 100% scale with no tiling. That means no taping dozens of letter-size pages together and no alignment errors creeping in across the seams. Printing a pattern this way is sometimes called "copy shop" or "large-format" printing.

Your Three Options for Printing a PDF Sewing Pattern

Print at home (tiled): Your pattern prints across many letter or A4 pages that you trim and tape together. Free if you own a printer, but slow, and small scaling errors compound across every taped seam.

A local copy shop: Most towns have a print shop that can handle large format. Convenient in theory, but staff rarely work with sewing patterns — so scaling, margins, and line clarity are inconsistent, and you often can't tell until you're home.

A dedicated A0 pattern service: A printer that does only sewing patterns prints at verified true scale on pattern-appropriate paper and ships to you. No taping, no scaling surprises, no counter interpretation. (That's what we do here at Tape Free Patterns!)

A0 or By-the-Foot — Which Does Your Pattern Need?

Most PDF sewing patterns are formatted for standard A0 — they print on one or more A0 sheets at true scale, the typical path for garment patterns.

Some patterns are non-standard: oversized, continuous, or formatted at dimensions that don't divide neatly into A0 pages. These print better by the foot — on continuous large-format media, priced by length instead of by A0 sheet. By-the-foot also covers large non-garment patterns — cosplay, craft, and RC/model builds — that aren't designed to standard sewing-pattern spec.

Not sure which you have? Our free Page Count Tool identifies whether your file is standard A0 or a by-the-foot job, so you can choose the right product before you order

Choosing Your Material: Bond, Translucent, or Non-Woven

  • Bond paper — affordable, easy to cut, ideal for most patterns.

  • Translucent paper — lets you trace and layer; preferred by many garment makers.

  • Non-woven interfacing (aka Easy Pattern) — durable, flexible, and tear-resistant for patterns you'll reuse.

You Don't Have to Calculate the Quantity

Once you've chosen the right product — A0 or By-the-Foot — and uploaded your pattern, our system automatically counts your file and sets the correct quantity for you. That holds for both formats: no guessing how many A0 sheets you need, and no working out the length for a by-the-foot job. You can't order the wrong amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is A0 paper?

A0 is the largest standard ISO paper size — 841 × 1189 mm (33.1 × 46.8 inches), roughly 16 letter-size sheets in one. Most full-size sewing patterns are designed to print on one or more A0 sheets.

Is A0 printing the same as copy shop printing?

Effectively, yes. "Copy shop" is the term sewists use for large-format, full-scale printing — your pattern at true 100% size on large sheets instead of tiled across letter pages.

How do I know if my pattern is A0 or by-the-foot?

Run your file through our free Page Count Tool. It identifies whether your pattern is standard A0 or a non-standard by-the-foot job, so you choose the right product before you order.

Do I have to tape A0 patterns together?

No — that's the whole point. Your pattern arrives full-size on one or more large sheets, with no tiling, taping, or alignment guesswork.
